We’re back for Dinked 101, the new album from LA-based singer-songwriter Johanna Samuels. Excelsior! is released on May 14th by Basin Rock.
Johanna Samuels grew up surrounded by classic songwriting (she’s even named after Dylan’s Visions of Johanna!) and this shows in her subtle and honest lyricism, reflecting on past relationships, companionship and the experience of womanhood in America. Musically, Samuels deftly combines roots-y Americana with classic pop backing, bringing to mind Courtney Marie Andrews (who also guests on backing vocals), The Staves, Nadia Reid and Big Thief, with tight harmonies, punchy drums and soulful Rhodes piano filling out her powerful vocals. Excelsior! was recorded to tape in Sam Owen’s (Widowspeak, Anna Burch, Hannah Cohen) new Catskills log cabin studio in the middle of winter, but captures the laid-back summery LA brightness of Samuels’ band.
