Willie J Healey – People & Their Dogs

We’ll admit a certain bias when recommending this debut album from local boy-done-good Willie J; we’ve been supporting him since day-one and have been championing his self-styled ‘rock & stroll’ for so long we can’t quite believe how accomplished his debut actually is!

Recorded in his garage just down the road in Carterton and then mixed out in Chicago at Jeff Tweedy’s Loft studio, this is a record that brilliantly captures the domestic bliss of watching the world drift by in suburban subterranea.

The album masterfully shifts in tempo and tone throughout ranging from bleary-eyed bedroom ballads, to thrashy ragers and faux-slacker anthems. Willie seems to channel both the Elvis’s at times as-well, adopting a Presley-esque quiver one minute while the next barking out an edgier, stabby vocal akin to mr Costello. Unafraid to let the songs unfurl in their own time (album opener Subterraneans for example) Willie shows a maturity and confidence and while he makes it look effortless at times, there’s a real depth to the quality of song-writing here, borne out of a near obsession with the craftsmanship involved in music’s creation, proving that behind the cheeky exterior young Will has a perfectionists ear.
