Anthony Joseph – Caribbean Roots

This brand new album represents a return to his roots for Anthony Joseph, the British/Trinidadian poet, novelist and jazz musician. Having started out as a joint project with the outstanding percussionist Roger Raspail (Papa Wemba, Kassav), ‘Caribbean Roots’ swiftly grew into a creative force incorporating the rhythms, sounds and vibes that rock the Caribbean from San Fernando, Kingston, Port-au-Prince and Havana.

Throughout the album Joseph and his collaborators incorporate elements from many different genres and style, free-form jazz rubs up against Afrobeat, Soca and Calypso, steel drums, alto sax, wah-wah guitars and congas all rise to the surface of this heady brew of sound but it’s Joseph’s commanding voice that takes the listener on a journey, he adopts various roles throughout these pieces, at times becoming a prophet, others a historian but whatever the role he is always a compelling presence.

This is an intoxicating, deeply rewarding listen and comes heartily recommended
