Solomon Grey are a soulful electronica/ sophisti-pop duo from Oxford (although frequently billed as from London, much to the band’s chagrin!) who are set for big things in 2016. The duo have worked extensively in soundtracks (most high profile being the BBC’s adaptation of JK Rowling’s ‘The Casual Vacancy’) but have now put together an expertly crafted debut album released through Decca records.
Moving from soulful to slinky to ethereal, theirs is a melancholic but deeply beautiful synth-based sound featuring measured, subtle piano melodies, soaring angelic vocal samples and passages of ambient, textured experimental soundscapes. However their real ace card is singer Joe Wilson’s stunning vocal range, suggesting both Wild Beasts singers in one body, which gives these songs their deep emotional power.
For fans of SOHN, Rhye, James Blake, Little Dragon or James Vincent McMorrow’s 2nd album. Sublime.
