FKA Twigs – LP1

FKA Twigs (as you guessed it stands for ‘Formerly Known As…’, a quick and easy response to another ‘Twigs’ forcing a name change) is the moniker of Cheltenham based dancer, singer, artist and shape-shifter Tahliah Barnett and this is her breath-taking debut album. Hot on the heels of a couple of critically acclaimed EPs and their accompanying eye catching videos, Twigs has recorded an album of entirely new material crafted in the studio, making this a complete work that needs to be absorbed as a whole.
Built from fractured, fragile, minimal beats, sounding like 90’s R&B stripped back to its bare bones and re-built into new and odd shapes, Twigs’ sound-world is full of space, tension and strangely compelling textures. Meanwhile her vocals, pitched high and airy in an almost angelic manner, carry creepy messages of obsessive desire, confusion and vulnerability. The closest comparisons to make would be the classic 90’s work of Tricky or Massive Attack or more recently The xx and How To Dress Well but this is very much a world of her own creation.
